Pete's Fish & Chips Introduce
Pete's Fish & Chips is far more than just a typical fast food stop in Phoenix; it is an enduring Arizona institution with roots tracing back to 1947. This specific location at 4121 N 44th St carries the torch of a long-standing family tradition, providing the Valley with a unique take on English-style fish and chips and deep-fried seafood favorites. Founded by Peter McLane Grant Jr., who was inspired by fish and chips shops he saw while serving in Europe during World War II, the establishment has grown from a humble 6' x 8' wooden shack to a beloved chain of restaurants.
The restaurant proudly operates as a quintessential fast food, seafood, and fish & chips venue, popular among college students, local families, groups, and tourists looking for a taste of Phoenix history. The philosophy that the founder lived by—selling three things: price, quality, and service—continues to define the experience. Pete's is celebrated for offering delicious, satisfying comfort food at incredibly reasonable prices, earning it the moniker of "the Biltmore for the common man."
The menu is an exercise in classic American fast-food simplicity, with a distinctive seafood twist. While the namesake Fish & Chips is the star, patrons rave about other signature items. The Monsterburger, a hearty 1/3 lb. patty named by Pete Grant after his four daughters (his "little monsters"), is a local legend. Other favorites include the shrimp and the chicken tenders, all of which are best paired with the infamous Pete's Special Sauce, a hard-to-describe, slightly spicy, tangy secret recipe that loyal customers often order in bulk.
The dining atmosphere is decidedly casual and historic, offering a quiet, non-pretentious experience. Most seating is covered outdoor seating, lending itself to a classic roadside stand feel. While it maintains its historic "cash-only" policy, an ATM is typically available on-site for customer convenience. This blend of tradition, value, and distinctive flavor makes Pete's Fish & Chips a truly unique and cherished part of the Phoenix dining landscape, where fifth-generation customers continue to return for a guaranteed, piping-hot meal.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We’ve been visiting Pete’s Fish n Chips off and on since the 1950’s. Since 2019, we’ve been visiting Pete’s on 44th Street on a weekly basis. When our beloved 17 year old pet dog, Turbo, became deaf and mostly blind, he didn’t like riding in the car anymore and we never left him alone. So I would call the order in to Pete’s and my husband would drive down and pick it up…every week. When our little Turbo passed at 19, we both would drive down but still bring the order home. And we’re still doing the same thing today, although there’s ample covered outdoor seating. We’ve gotten to meet and have become friends with some of the staff who work so very hard and sincerely care about their customers. Elizabeth holds a special place in my heart. Thank you Pete’s Fish n Chips for being there for us and always being the most reasonably priced delicious food anywhere! From fish, seafood, burgers, burritos, hot dogs, chicken, fries, onion rings, and jalapenos. Simply the best!Jim and Doris Nelson
October 13 · Belinda NelsonMe and my husband came here tonite to enjoy some Pete’s… never again the shrimp was raw! The place was very dirty filthy! 😡😡😡😡 fries were just re heated! Very poor!
August 30 · Sally Gerardo44st Indian school let me tell you the quality of your family business has gone down hill extremely!!!!!!!! this is a large onion ring? This is sad your manager with the red hair said that well we actually got 9 rings instead of eight…how insightful this information he passed down to us was He was not rude at all and seemed very apologetic about it but what’s up with the quality of food??? they took over 45 min in the drive thru for this they were horse playing and still managed to forget an item.
September 12 · Prissy BPete’s Fish & Chips never disappoints. The food is always good, and I usually go for the #2 it hits the spot every time. Service is friendly and quick, especially through the drive-thru. Definitely one of my go-to spots.
September 12 · Jesse GIt is not the same anymore its terrible fish and the shrimp are small and round. Since you changed vendors you ruined Pete's it sucks now. I guess I have to try that new place in surprise that is suppose to have your old long, crunchy shrimp and fresh good fish and not some store bought tasting ones. Yuck! 🤢🤮😡
