Hole-In-The-Wall BBQ Joint Introduce
Hole-In-The-Wall BBQ Joint is a long-standing and characterful dining destination located in the heart of Phoenix, offering a blend of authentic barbecue and comforting classics. Far from being a traditional standalone restaurant, this eatery is uniquely situated within the expansive Hilton Phoenix Resort at the Peak, giving it a distinctive setting amidst the stunning backdrop of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve. The name itself is ironic, as the establishment is housed in what was originally a 1940s-era ranch house, creating an atmosphere that is intentionally casual, cozy, and rich with old-western flare.
The restaurant is dedicated to serving a full range of meals, from breakfast and brunch to substantial lunch and dinner offerings. While the primary draw is the barbecue and smokehouse fare, the menu extends to classic American comfort food, a variety of salads, and decadent desserts. This breadth makes it a versatile spot for resort guests, locals looking for a dependable meal, and groups seeking a relaxed dining experience. However, potential visitors should be aware of the current operational status; recent customer experiences indicate that the team may be working under temporary constraints, such as operating from a food truck or adapting to ongoing resort construction, which can affect the consistency of the food execution.
Despite any temporary logistical challenges—such as initial difficulty in finding the location or navigating construction that limits parking—the restaurant is lauded for its hospitality. Staff are consistently described as incredibly warm and attentive,
and one reviewer highlighted the evident dedication to service
and heart behind the hospitality.
This focus on the guest experience ensures a pleasant visit, even during periods where the kitchen operations are constrained. The ambiance, with its two spacious patios and a sunken bar overlooking water features, is a highlight, offering a unique mountain and water views
for outdoor dining.
For those visiting for the barbecue, the menu features classic items like Pulled Pork, Chopped Brisket, and Smoked St. Louis Ribs. It's important to note that a customer mentioned barbecue plates are only available after 5 PM, suggesting the lunchtime menu is more focused on sandwiches, salads, and non-barbecue entrées. While a patron found the ribs to be fall-off-the-bone tender,
there was a critique that the seasoning lacked depth and the sauce tasted store-bought. Another critique pointed to a lack of smoke flavor in the pulled pork and dry brisket, which was speculated to be yesterday’s leftovers.
The mixed reviews highlight the current transitional state, yet the high praise for the attentive service and inviting setting suggests a strong foundation for future culinary excellence once operations return to a traditional kitchen setup.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I wanted to try a new bbq place to me. This one disappointed. Our server was great but the food was lackluster. First there are no bbq plates until 5pm. Bummer. I had wings which were okay. Pulled pork has no smoke on it at all. None. My friend had the brisket nachos and the brisket was dry. Clearly yesterday’s leftovers.Location isn’t easy to find and is a bland clubhouse. There are too many good bbq places in Phoenix for me to ever return.
September 27 · John CorreiaTucked deep within the Hilton resort grounds, Hole in Wall BBQ offers a casual and inviting atmosphere. With its unassuming name and reputation, I arrived with high expectations. While the experience was pleasant overall, the meal delivered a mix of highs and lows.First, the setting. Despite ongoing construction that limits parking and requires a bit of navigation, the space is remarkably clean. The staff is incredibly warm and attentive. There was no wait to be seated, and the tables offer ample space for those with mobility challenges. These elements created a welcoming and relaxed environment to begin the evening. The menu is modest, which often signals a focus on quality. I opted for the Smoked St. Louis Ribs with grilled vegetables and fries. The ribs arrived fall-off-the-bone tender, a promising start but lacked the depth of seasoning expected from a barbecue establishment. The sauce leaned heavily toward store-bought familiarity rather than a house-crafted blend with unique character. The grilled vegetable side was notably underwhelming. Composed almost entirely of onions with a sparse showing of bell peppers, it missed the balance expected from the menu description. However, the fries and onion rings were both crisp and expertly executed; a highlight of the plate. It is worth noting that the team is currently operating out of a food truck instead of a full-service kitchen. This certainly explains some of the constraints in execution. I chose not to rate this experience lower because of the genuinely pleasant atmosphere and the staff’s evident dedication to service.Hole in Wall BBQ has potential. Once construction is complete and operations return to a traditional kitchen setup, I look forward to revisiting. There is heart behind the hospitality. With a few culinary adjustments, this could become a standout destination in Phoenix's BBQ scene.
August 02 · Risen VideoWe stopped in for dinner at the Hole-In-the-Wall restaurant our first night in Phoenix, while staying at the Hilton Resort and Retreat. The restaurant decor is fun and rustic. I was surprised with how slow the restaurant was considering they are the only restaurant on site that was open for a late night dinner. The hostess was attentive and kind, and sat us right away. Her fun, black heart shaped glasses were also super cool and definitely added some personality to her work attire! Points to her for her fashion choice for sure! The service was a bit on the slow side, unfortunately. This was shocking considering how slow the restaurant was. As a patron of the establishment, and former waitress myself for many, many years, I couldn’t help but notice the clumps of servers standing around and chatting due to how slow the restaurant was. This would be fine normally, because I get it, but there were also times we weren’t able to get refills on our drinks due to the lack of attentiveness by the staff. The food was good though. The nachos were outstanding! Definitely flavorful and loaded enough to satiate one to three people. My house salad was also tasty and filled me up well. My husband had the turkey club and mac n cheese. He loved the mac n cheese specifically.Honestly, this was a good little stop for some late night dinner. My hope is that the restaurant will upgrade as the Hilton does because there is some untapped potential here to be capitalized on. Overall, a good experience though all things considered!
April 08 · Stephanie McWethyThe waiter was really nice. The nachos were far from the best we’ve ever had but we were hungry so we ate it all. Overall they did have a decent amount of vegetarian options on the menu u but none of them were entrees. We recommend adding a veggie burger.
June 16 · Dr. Angelique BarbaraThe food was good but honestly the service left something to be desired. It kind of felt like nothing I said was good enough for the server? She was perfectly friendly but just didn't agree with me I guess. For example she asked what my daughter wanted to drink with her food and I said just water. The server responded "well it comes with a drink, like apple juice, milk or lemonade" and I said "oh yeah just water" she then responded by just re-listing the juices and milk she had listed before. At this point I thought maybe I wasn't allowed to get just water for her? So I said "okay milk then I guess... She's not really into juice" to which the server responded "so maybe lemonade then?" I just gave up and said sure. At the end she asked if I wanted boxes and I said just one because I know my daughter and myself and we won't eat leftovers besides maybe the fries. She looked at my puzzled and said "only one?" And I said "yes" then she pointed to all of my food and said "Hmmm maybe 2 or 3." At this point my toddler is refusing to sit still and wants to leave so, fine, if I must get multiple boxes I will even though I know I won't eat the food in it. Again, the server was friendly not rude just didn't approve of my responses or something.
