Located in the heart of Phoenix, this establishment is far more than a typical restaurant; it is a cultural experience centered around authentic Ethiopian Cuisine. The dining philosophy here is often communal, with many dishes traditionally served family-style atop a large piece of injera—the iconic, spongy, sourdough flatbread made from teff flour. This approach encourages sharing and conversation, making it a perfect spot for groups, families, and solo diners alike.
The menu at Abyssinia is expansive, featuring a wide array of meat and vegetable stews, known as wat, alongside other traditional dishes. The use of unique Ethiopian spices, such as the renowned berbere blend, ensures every bite is deeply flavorful and aromatic. Patrons frequently praise the food for being "traditionally prepared and served," highlighting the commitment to authenticity. The experience is welcoming to all, regardless of familiarity with the cuisine; the friendly staff is often noted for being helpful and accommodating, guiding guests through the menu and the traditional style of eating with their hands using the injera as their utensil.
Beyond the savory entrees, Abyssinia takes pride in its café roots. It is celebrated for having "Great coffee" and a "Great tea selection," offering traditional Ethiopian Coffee, which is often an entire ceremony in itself, alongside drinks like Kimeme Tea and Macchiato. The overall atmosphere is carefully cultivated to be casual, cozy, and quiet, providing a relaxing and trendy environment where people can connect over unique and delicious food. May 19 · Jesse R. Brown NDThe food was amazing! And honestly very well priced we ordered the veggie signature dish, 2 meat dishes and sambusas and it was very affordable. Everything was SOO flavorful! The service was great! Our waitress was very kind and super helpful !The restaurant itself was very cozy, authentic decor, and I enjoyed being able to have our own private area to enjoy our food.
March 15 · Des L.My first time eating Ethiopian food and it was awesome. When I asked for a spicy meat dish I was given a rich and very spicy beef platter with onions and jalapenos and a crepe like bread to sponge up the broth. I really liked it, but the heat level is not for the faint of heart. Definitely gonna be coming back.
May 22 · Garrett FarleyAbsolutely amazing. The owner is a wonderful woman who made me feel right at home and recommended different dishes. The birz is sweet and delicious, and the lamb was perfectly cooked, served piping hot and quite literally the best butter-braised lamb I've ever had. The injera was fluffy and just the right sourness and came with a bright fresh green salad. Highly, highly recommend coming here.
