★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1As a fellow former Chicagoan, I came in hoping for the flavors I grew up with. Unfortunately, Big Bacons missed the mark for me.They do get a point for cooking to order, which I appreciate. I ordered the fried chicken wings with double mac and cheese as my sides. But let's talk about those wings...Every Chicagoan knows fried chicken wings = whole wings. What I got were party wings, and while I'll own that I should've asked to confirm, I did check Yelp photos beforehand and saw at least one showing whole wings. That wasn't the worst part, though. The wings looked like they were those pre-breaded and pre-frozen, and the breading was way too heavy. It was also either the heavy breading or they were jumbo-sized. Either way, I didn't enjoy them, I couldn't even eat them. Now for the bright spot: the mac and cheese was creamy, cheesy, and comforting, this side dish actually reminded me of home. That's where Big Bacons earns its second star.If I return, it'll be for the mac and cheese. But if you're looking for true Chicago-style wings, this might not be the spot.
August 28 · Lane ReedThe restaurant is super cute & very homey. I love the blunt decor in the bathroom. It's so black & beautiful. The food was very good but they were out a lot of sides. I can understand why though it was 6:30 on Father's Day they close at 8. I'm looking forward to going again but much earlier. I immediately called my friend in Texas & told her I will be taking her the next time she comes out. I will be bringing my mama & aunties too ooh some cousins too. The food was bomb! The waiter was bomb! He sat at the table to take my order & discuss the menu with me
June 16 · Calandra JacksonPlaced my order online at 5:58 PM with a listed pickup time of 30 minutes. I arrived at Big Bacon at 6:49 PM, paid in person, and was told my order was about to be bagged. However, I still had to wait an additional 30 minutes, receiving my food around 7:20 PM. While the delay was frustrating, the staff remained courteous.Customer Service and Ordering ExperienceUpon entry, the restaurant was clean and well-lit. Two friendly ladies greeted me and took my payment. While their customer service was appreciated, I strongly recommend Big Bacon add an online payment option. It would streamline the experience and reduce front-end congestion. After paying, I noticed the receipt didn’t match the online pricing. Entrees on the website were listed at $19.99 (except stuffed salmon at $24.99) and stated they include two sides. However, I was charged $28.99 for the jerk salmon and $24.99 for the catfish. When I raised this, Nia politely explained that the online prices don’t include sides, despite the menu indicating otherwise. This discrepancy is misleading and should be corrected to avoid future customer confusion.Order DetailsFried Catfish: Served with mac and cheese and Brussels sprouts (plain)Jerk Salmon: Served with mac and cheese and candied yams (requested in a separate container, which was not honored)Food Quality and FlavorCatfish: Cooked perfectly with a crisp golden crust. Not overly salty, no strong fishy taste, and well-seasoned. A definite highlight.Jerk Salmon: Flavorful and tender, though visually underwhelming. The vegetables on top were minimal, which detracted from presentation.Candied Yams: Delicious with great seasoning and a juicy texture. Portion was small compared to expectations.Brussels Sprouts: Standout item. Savory, slightly sweet, and cooked in a buttery glaze. Could eat a whole tray.Mac and Cheese: Decent flavor but overly cheesy. Needed a better cheese-to-noodle ratio and more seasoning in the pasta itself.Rice (under salmon): Moist, sticky, and well-cooked. A nice complement to the jerk sauce.Portion SizesCatfish: Generous with two sizable pieces. Worth the price if it were truly $19.99.Salmon: Large fillet, enough for two servings.Sides: Underwhelming portion for yams and Brussels sprouts. The mac and cheese was heaping.Pricing and TransparencyThe biggest issue was the pricing discrepancy. The website says entrees include two sides at $19.99, but I was charged significantly more — $28.99 for salmon and $24.99 for catfish. If sides are extra, that must be clearly stated online. No clear reason was provided for the price hike, and it came off as misleading. This needs urgent attention from management to maintain customer trust.Service TeamThe two ladies at the front were kind and tried their best despite being visibly overwhelmed. However, a male staff member appeared disengaged — no greeting, no smile, no acknowledgment. For a small restaurant experience, staff warmth makes a huge difference. Everyone who walks in should feel welcomed.Parking SituationParking is a major issue. The alley behind the restaurant is filled with trash and debris, posing a risk for tires and safety. There’s limited space, so walking or using a rideshare service is a better option if you plan to dine in or pick up.Final ThoughtsDespite the long wait and pricing issues, the food was satisfying overall. The Brussels sprouts, catfish, and yams were standouts, and I’d return for those. I recommend better order management to meet listed pickup times and immediate corrections to the online pricing. Including a canned drink or dessert at this price point could also improve value perception.Would return, but with adjusted expectations and clarity on pricing.
July 09 · A BFood was yummy and service was great. The items were full of flavor and prepared well. We enjoyed each entree we got( pot roast and the jerk chicken). They were out of a few items but that leaves another opportunity to come back and eat. There is no designated parking. You can maybe find a spot in the alley right outside, park across the street at the dispensary or somewhere in the surrounding neighborhood.
July 20 · Kiera CI visited this establishment last week. My first impression upon walking through the door had me leery but what I didn’t know was that my experience would just keep going down from there. When I walked in the floor was extremely sticky (first red flag). I told the young lady behind the counter I wanted to dine in and when I was ready to leave, I would order another plate to go for my friend at home. I ordered my food and sat down. After sitting for a few minutes she approached me with a machine to pay before I even received my food (second red flag) even though at that point I was uncomfortable due to those first two things and also the fact that the young lady didn’t seem friendly, I decided to stay and try anyways. After I ordered and paid it was like her job was done and she just sat behind the counter on her phone. I then was approached by a young man that had a glass of just ice with no water. He placed the glass on the table and the young lady then came back to ask if I wanted something to drink. I ask for just water and was also charged for that. Before the food came out the restaurant began to feel non-inviting to me. I then asked for everything to go. When I opened the food before leaving the jerk chicken was overcooked, the pork chops lacked seasoning and the Mac & cheese tasted like craft. I hate that because I really wanted to like this place. I did mention to her that my jerk chicken looked overcooked and she said "what do you want me to do?" I ended up just saying never mind and walking out the door. I can't believe they have service that awful and to top it off the food was nothing that I should've paid $56 for.
