Tacos Chiwas Introduce
Tacos Chiwas is a beloved Arizona-born restaurant that brings the authentic, rich flavors of Chihuahua, Mexico, directly to the heart of the Valley—and now, to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). Founded by husband-and-wife duo Armando Hernandez and Nadia Holguin, this restaurant has garnered widespread acclaim across the Phoenix metro area for its commitment to traditional, high-quality Chihuahuan cuisine. The expansion into Terminal 4 at PHX is a true testament to the quality and popularity of their food, allowing both local Arizonans and international travelers to experience a genuine taste of Northern Mexican culinary heritage.
Unlike many quick-service airport eateries, Tacos Chiwas is a local favorite, recognized by industry experts and even featured on national television programs like the Food Network's “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.” This reputation is built on hard work and consistency, including making essential components like tortillas from scratch. The menu focuses on simple, yet intensely flavorful dishes that honor the food the owners grew up eating, specializing in various styles of tacos, burritos, and quesadillas. While the airport setting requires a slightly streamlined menu to ensure speedy service for travelers, the core commitment to fresh, vibrant Chihuahuan flavors remains.
For Arizona locals, seeing a respected establishment like Tacos Chiwas at the airport is a point of pride, confirming that high-quality, authentic regional cuisine is available even during the stress of travel. The casual atmosphere is designed for convenience, serving travelers who might be grabbing a quick bite or sitting down for a more relaxed meal post-security. It stands out as an exceptional choice for anyone craving delicious, trustworthy Mexican food before they board their flight.
The Tacos Chiwas airport location is situated for maximum convenience for departing travelers at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX).
- Address: 3400 Sky Hbr Blvd, Phoenix, AZ 85034, USA (This address represents the overall airport complex).
- Specific Location: Post-Security, inside Terminal 4, near Gate B4 (or B5, as some sources suggest).
The crucial detail for this location is that it is post-security. This means guests must have a boarding pass and pass through TSA screening to access the restaurant. Terminal 4 is PHX’s largest terminal, serving numerous domestic and international airlines. Being located near the B Gates makes it easily accessible for travelers flying out of that concourse, as well as a worthwhile detour for those with a layover or flight departing from a nearby gate area.
The restaurant is designed to operate within the busy airport environment, focusing on counter service to expedite orders. As a modern airport concession, general accessibility features such as proximity to restrooms and wide concourse access are standard. The experience is tailored to the needs of travelers who are managing time constraints before their flights.
Tacos Chiwas offers services geared toward the efficiency required of a post-security airport establishment while maintaining the quality of its traditional offerings.
- Counter Service: Streamlined ordering for a quick turnaround, essential for travelers on a schedule.
- Taco Platters and Burritos: The core menu features their acclaimed tacos (available individually or in trios) and burritos, providing substantial, flavorful meal options.
- Breakfast Service: Catering to early-morning travelers, a breakfast menu is available, often including breakfast burritos.
- Quesadillas and Salads: Additional meal varieties are offered, expanding the options beyond just tacos.
- Snack and To-Go Items: Provides convenient snacks like chips and guacamole, perfect for enjoying before a flight or taking on the plane.
- Handmade Tortillas: A key service differentiator, the restaurant includes a tortilla machine to press and trim fresh corn tortillas on-site, a rarity in an airport setting.
- Beverage Options: Likely includes sodas and bottled drinks, and some reports indicate a bar component offering margaritas and other cocktails at the airport location.
The success of Tacos Chiwas lies in its commitment to authentic flavor and its status as a highly-regarded local Phoenix brand.
- Authentic Chihuahuan Cuisine: Focuses on the unique flavors of Northern Mexico, distinct from general Mexican-American fare. Signature dishes include Barbacoa (shredded beef cheek) and the proprietary Taco Chiwas (beef, ham, jalapeño, and Asadero cheese).
- Locally-Owned Success Story: As a local favorite in Arizona, the restaurant has multiple locations across the Valley (Midtown Phoenix, Mesa) and is a celebrated part of the local food scene, adding credibility and a unique local flair to the airport’s offerings.
- Fresh, Handmade Tortillas: The use of a dedicated machine to make fresh corn tortillas on-site ensures superior quality and is a significant step above standard airport food.
- Media Recognition: Owners Armando Hernandez and Nadia Holguin and their restaurant have been recognized by prominent local and national food media, including features on the Food Network.
- Streamlined Airport Menu: While focused, the menu is engineered to deliver the greatest hits of the brand efficiently, making it an excellent stop for a guaranteed, high-flavor meal.
- Breakfast Burritos: A popular morning item catering specifically to the travel crowd, offering a substantial and authentic start to the day.
While the nature of an airport concession means most direct communication is often handled at the counter, here is the primary location data. For specific operational questions like hours, travelers often consult the official Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport website or the restaurant’s official site.
- Address: 3400 Sky Hbr Blvd, Phoenix, AZ 85034, USA (Terminal 4, Post-Security, near Gate B4/B5)
- Phone: Note that the phone number for the airport location is not publicly or consistently listed. For the general Phoenix area restaurant, a common number is (602) 358-8830 (Midtown Phoenix location). It is recommended to check the PHX airport directory for the most direct contact for the Terminal 4 site.
Tacos Chiwas is a must-choose for anyone passing through Terminal 4, especially Arizona locals who appreciate the value of supporting homegrown culinary talent. When you choose Tacos Chiwas, you are not settling for typical bland airport fare; you are opting for an award-winning, authentic taste of Chihuahuan Mexico. The fundamental quality of the food, particularly the fresh, handmade corn tortillas, and the intensely flavorful fillings like the Barbacoa and Pastor, is a major draw that elevates the dining experience far above its fast-casual setting.
The experience is worth choosing for the food alone, as evidenced by positive customer reviews praising the delicious tacos and great taste. However, it is important for customers to manage expectations regarding service speed and inflexibility, which can sometimes be common challenges in high-volume airport operations, as noted in a critical customer review regarding the service and portion control on items like cheese and salsa. While the price point may reflect the premium of airport concessions, the promise of food that is “literally walked back 10 mins for” is a powerful endorsement of the culinary quality Tacos Chiwas delivers, making it a flavorful and memorable dining choice at PHX.

October 10 · V HaddadThis place isn't gonna last. The service is the worst I've ever experienced, from the cashier to the bagger. I paid 2$ for cheese, and they barely put any on my chirisso breakfast burrito. When I asked for all 3 salsa, the bagger said he could only give me 2. I'd have to pay 3$ for a large one if I wanted extra. He was extremely rude about it. Said they are cracking down on giving out salsa because of the cost of the food (which to me already is way too, overpriced). Understandable, however this was the first time I had ever been there. I don't know what salsa flavor I like yet. Also, 2 isn't enough for the burrito. If you want me to come often, let me try them, and be nice! Rudeness is all it takes to ruin a successful business. I give this place a year tops before it loses money and forced to shut down. Oh, and he only gave me one napkin to top it off...lol talk about top tear customer service. SMH
October 13 · Randell HeflinI love the tacos Chiwas in Mesa so I was excited to come here but I did not even finish my meal. I ordered the bean and cheese burrito and the beans had ZERO flavor and cheese was not melted. The tortilla also did not taste the same. Meh.
October 13 · Rebecca BustosI don't write many reviews, especially for airport restaurants, but this place was incredible. The ordering and speed of service was excellent. The food was DELICIOUS. I honestly haven't had good tacos like that in a really long time. I ordered the carne asada tacos. The meat was juicy, tender and flavorful. The onions and veggies were tasty. The red hot sauce was just spicy enough. Truly excellently prepared by Garner. When I fly back through Phoenix I will be returning.
September 30 · Jacob WallaceThe service was slower than dial-up internet, the barbacoa tasted like the smell of wet dog, and salsa was not included.
