Hilal Grill is an all-encompassing dining establishment, identifying as an Indian restaurant, Afghan restaurant, Bar & grill, Barbecue restaurant, Biryani restaurant, and Buffet restaurant, confirming its versatility and commitment to a wide range of flavor profiles and dining formats.
A central feature of Hilal Grill's identity is its dedication to serving Halal food, making it a reliable choice for patrons seeking this specific dietary requirement. Known particularly for its kabobs and boasting a great tea selection, Hilal Grill promises a warm and flavorful journey through the diverse cuisines of the region.
Hilal Grill is conveniently located at 1638 N 40th St, Phoenix, AZ 85008, USA. This address places it within a reachable distance for many residents of Central and East Phoenix, situated near major traffic routes, which enhances its accessibility as a local dining spot.
The establishment prioritizes accessibility for all guests, a crucial feature for any community restaurant. Patrons will find a comprehensive set of amenities designed for ease of access, including a wheelchair accessible entrance, a designated wheelchair accessible parking lot, a wheelchair accessible restroom, and wheelchair accessible seating within the dining areas. This attention to detail ensures a comfortable and welcoming environment for everyone.
Parking is made convenient with both a free parking lot and free street parking available, minimizing the stress of finding a spot. However, prospective diners should note, as one customer observed, the lot can be "limited," which could necessitate using street parking during particularly busy peak hours. Despite this minor point, the overall accessibility and ease of location make it a favorable choice for dining out in Phoenix.

For Arizonans looking for a genuine and multifaceted South Asian dining experience, Hilal Grill is undoubtedly worth choosing for several compelling reasons, starting with its unique culinary scope.
Unlike restaurants specializing in a single cuisine, Hilal Grill’s triple focus allows patrons to explore a rich tapestry of flavors, from the creamy Butter Chicken of Indian cuisine to the hearty barbecue of the Afghani tradition, all under one roof. The popularity of their kabobs, a staple of both Pakistani and Afghani barbecue, suggests that this is where the kitchen truly excels and is a definite recommendation for any first-time visitor.
The comprehensive nature of the menu is another major selling point. Patrons with diverse dietary needs will appreciate the abundance of options, from a full slate of Vegetarian Curries, including Palak Paneer and Afghani Gulpi, to the reassurance of Halal certification. This commitment to inclusivity is a significant benefit to the community.
Furthermore, the physical dining experience contributes greatly to its worth. The indoor area is described as spacious and inviting, offering a casual and quiet environment ideal for conversation and relaxed dining. The availability of the Sunday Buffet provides an excellent opportunity for groups and families to sample many dishes at a set price, maximizing value. While one customer noted a less-than-ideal delivery experience (cold, spicy food, and delayed service), the same reviewer recommended ordering again if dining in, underscoring that the food's flavor is present and the in-house experience is superior.
In summary, Hilal Grill should be chosen for its:
- Unique Blend of Cuisines: A rare chance to taste Indian, Pakistani, and Afghani specialties.
- High-Value Dining Formats: The popular Sunday Buffet offers great variety and value.
- Atmosphere and Accessibility: A welcoming, cozy, and fully accessible venue perfect for any crowd.
- Support for a Local Business: Patrons are supporting a women-owned business dedicated to quality Halal food.
While the Biryanis may not be the boldest in Phoenix, the strengths in curries, kabobs, the great tea selection, and the overall dining environment make Hilal Grill a highly recommended addition to any Arizonan's local restaurant rotation, especially for those seeking authentic, diverse, and Halal-friendly South Asian comfort food.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1I recently visited this restaurant and took takeout, and I’d give it a solid 3 stars, maybe nudging toward 4 on a good day. The indoor seating arrangements caught my eye—spacious, well-organized, and inviting, with a clean and welcoming atmosphere. They serve a variety of dishes, but they’re particularly known for their kabobs, which seem to be a crowd favorite. For my takeout order, I tried the beef biriyani and chicken biriyani. Honestly, they were Okay but not the best biriyani I’ve had in Phoenix. Both lacked the bold flavors I was hoping for, and the beef biriyani, in particular, felt a bit dry. On a brighter note, the mango lassi was good—refreshing and well-balanced, it was a great addition to the meal.the parking situation; the lot is limited, which could be a hassle during peak hours. Overall, it’s a solid spot for a one-time visit, especially if you’re curious about their kabobs or want to enjoy their pleasant indoor vibe. I’d recommend giving it a try but don’t expect the biriyani to blow you away. They do have a buffet which is 29.99 per person (Only Sundays I believe)
August 19 · Bimal SivadasI ordered a take meal from here through door dash. I also called the restaurant to make sure it was non spicy. I placed my order at 2:55pm but I didn’t receive the food until 4:15pm. All of the food was cold when I received it. I never received any updates from the restaurant regarding when I would receive the food. The food also was very spicy! The food did have some flavor. I would only ordered from here again if I was dining in.
May 19 · Aj WLoved it. Everyone inside is super friendly , really lends to that family owned atmosphere. Food was delicious, so much flavour. I was staring down everyone's food coming out saying, oh I wanna try that, and that! Will definitely be back.
August 14 · Jacob AlexanderTheir food is incredibly flavorful with a fairly decent, although limited, selection for their salad bar. The majority of their primary 8+ dishes had meat in them (all were either chicken or beef, no pork), with about 3-4 dishes that did not appear to have any meat in them, although I don't recall them being clearly labeled as vegetarian. You can order freshly fried bread from the staff, which is included in the buffet cost. However, if you order hot Chai (black spiced tea with milk), it is a separate cost. There were about 2 different sweet desserts included at the buffet with other dessert choices available at extra cost from a separate area. My favorite is the free beverage section, with a variety of absolutely delicious fruit juices. 😋 There was no wait time for seating, so it's a great place to go when you're already starving! The only slight challenge was the limited parking, but if you are patient and wait for a little bit, someone will leave and vacate a parking spot. The cost is currently about $25 per person, so you'll want to factor that into your budget. Thanks for reading my review! 🙏🏾
October 14 · Kindness MattersBeen wanting to try this place for a long time and finally got takeout tonight! Ordered it for pick up and it was ready quickly and in the time frame I was given. The hostess was pleasant when I arrived and helped me get my order and made sure I had everything in my order before I left. The restaurant was nice inside, clean, well kept, good vibes and nice people! When I got the meal home I was quite satisfied, everything was hot and delicious, nicely seasoned, not overly spiced or salted - a good balance in all of the items I ordered. I got the garlic tandoori naan, which was soft and delicious, the chicken curry which was extremely tasty and the chicken was tender and so so yummy. We also got the beef shish kebab and it was moist and very very tasty. Lastly we got the biryani rice which was nicely spicy (not too much , just a good balance) and delicious. Also got two mango lassi which were great. Will definitely be back so happy it’s in the neighborhood and my only regret is that I haven’t tried this spot sooner! 😊
