La Salsa Tacos de Canasta Introduce
For Arizona food enthusiasts seeking an authentic and somewhat unique style of Mexican street food, La Salsa Tacos de Canasta offers a taste of tradition right in Phoenix. Tacos de Canasta, literally "Basket Tacos" (also known as "Tacos Sudados" or "Sweaty Tacos"), are a beloved staple of Mexican cuisine, originating from Tlaxcala. They are distinguished by their preparation: small tacos filled with various stews like potato, chicharrón, or beans, which are then dipped in oil or melted lard and stacked tightly in a cloth-lined basket or steamer. This stacking process allows the tacos to steam in their own warmth, creating an incredibly soft, moist, and uniform texture.
La Salsa Tacos de Canasta, a proudly Latino-owned business, brings this particular culinary heritage to the Phoenix metro area. Their commitment is to offer this traditional comfort food—often served as a quick, satisfying meal in Mexico—to local customers for both lunch and dinner. The restaurant is popular for its specialized focus, which includes core fillings such as Papa (Potato), Chicharrón (Pork Rinds), Frijol (Beans), and Chorizo con Papa, as well as chicken-based options. Diners can typically purchase these tacos in sets, such as an "Orden de Tacos de Canasta" of six, with a variety of flavor choices.
Customer feedback offers a balanced view of the dining experience. One reviewer, drawn in by promotional videos, found the tacos to be "just ok," specifically noting that the Chicharrón and Frijol tacos were average, though the Papa taco was cited as the best option. This patron also pointed out the location's nature as a food hub, observing that "All you see it's doordash and ubereats drivers going in and out," and that the dining area is a "little table in there." This is an important detail for local users to note, as it frames the establishment more as a takeout/delivery specialist rather than a traditional sit-down restaurant. Another customer echoed a concern about the portion size, stating that while the flavor was "good," the tacos were "very flat and very little meat inside," suggesting an occasional issue with consistency or value.
Despite the mixed reviews on value and atmosphere, the core product—Tacos de Canasta—offers a distinctive and authentic Mexican culinary experience unlike the more common grilled or fried tacos found elsewhere in the Valley. The focus is purely on comfort food, quick bites, and small plates, served in a casual setting. La Salsa Tacos de Canasta is highly suitable for solo diners and groups looking for an efficient, flavorful, and budget-friendly meal.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1We went here for a tik tok videos we saw, and they said we're the best de canasta tacos in LA, and now in Phoenix, they are far away for being the best ones, this is just another honest review that I made. Tacos are just ok. The best one is Papa. clChicharron is not good and frijol is just an average taco. The place is just a hub for you go and pick up your orders. All you see it's doordash and ubereats drivers going in and out, we ate in a little table in there. Tacos are 6 for 12 dlls. Or 2.25 each. It's an ok restaurant but far away from beige best canasta tacos.
August 20 · Marcos Ramirezflavor wise it was good but they were so skimpy. i got one of each, chicharrón , chicken and chorizo . very flat and very little meat inside.
July 26 · KarlaThose tacos de canastas hit the spot!! They were perfect! We tried them all, they are all delicious and full of flavor, my favorite one was the chorizo! We are coming back for more!
June 30 · Nathalie HerreraAn Experience That Left Much to Be Desired (Steamed Tacos / Tacos de Canasta)As someone who’s had the fortune of traveling throughout much of Mexico and tasting steamed tacos (also known as tacos de canasta) in places like Mexico City, the Valley of Mexico, Puebla, Veracruz, Tepic, and Tijuana, I came to La Salsa with high expectations. Friends from Sonora had enthusiastically recommended the place, assuring me I would find the authentic, well-crafted flavor of those traditional tacos that we Mexicans hold dear.Unfortunately, my experience did not come close to what was promised.I ordered a variety of fillings: chicharrón, chicharrón with potato, chicken, beans, and plain potato. The only taco that was passable was the bean taco—simple, but decent. The rest were disappointing. The meats seemed to have been processed or ground to the point where the fillings resembled purees. The texture was unappetizing and visually unappealing, almost as if the contents had been pre-chewed. There was no clear distinction in flavor between one taco and another. For those of us familiar with traditional taco fillings, this was a major letdown. The toppings were also underwhelming: an excessive amount of cabbage, just a few small pieces of pickled onion, a slice of jalapeño, and a couple of pickled carrot rounds. Nothing about it evoked the full and flavorful experience one expects when ordering this type of taco.I had seen videos on social media where the tacos appeared to be made with care and in traditional style. That, along with the recommendation, motivated me to drive over 20 minutes to try them. Sadly, what I found was far from what I saw in the videos or from what one expects when looking for flavors that connect us to our roots.I don’t write this to offend anyone, but rather as constructive criticism from someone who has tasted the originals and knows what these tacos can truly offer when done right. I understand that ingredients and supplies may vary by region, and that perhaps they are targeting a different audience—maybe people less familiar with these flavors. But for those of us from Mexico who grew up with this food, our expectations are different.I don’t plan on returning, and honestly, I wouldn’t recommend this place to people who genuinely know and appreciate tacos de canasta from central Mexico. I do hope this review is taken as an opportunity to improve, because the idea is good, but the execution falls far short of doing justice to this gem of Mexican cuisine.
May 17 · Arturo JimenezI met this guy i think he was the owner of this taco business at the phoenix downtown farmers market last week and I bought some steamed tacos from him, honestly the TACOS WERE OKAY VERY MID.. I'm sorry maybe could do better , but his customer service was very friendly and so good that I trust he can do better ! I would come back but not for awhile 😅
