Restaurant Valet Parking Checklist: Protect the Car, Keys, and Claim Ticket
On this page
Quick answer
Before using restaurant valet parking, remove valuables, record the car’s condition and mileage, close windows, and give only the vehicle key or limited valet credential. Verify that the stand serves the restaurant, keep the claim ticket private, and photograph it without posting it. At pickup, inspect the vehicle before leaving the valet area and report damage, warning lights, missing property, or an unexpected charge immediately.
If the lane, attendant, or ticket does not clearly identify the authorized operator, ask the restaurant host to confirm. Do not hand keys to a person merely because they are standing near the entrance. When safe parking and key control cannot be confirmed, choose self-parking, a garage, rideshare, taxi, or another restaurant.
Prepare before entering the valet lane
Pull over somewhere lawful before the entrance so you can organize without blocking traffic. Remove cash, documents, medication, electronics, bags, home keys, garage controls, work credentials, weapons, and anything containing an address. Place items you must leave in the vehicle out of sight before arriving, not while attendants or bystanders are watching.
Check fuel or charge level, odometer, exterior condition, wheel condition, and dashboard warnings. Photograph all sides in a safe location. Turn off privacy-sensitive navigation history or home-address shortcuts if the car allows it, and lock the glovebox or console only if the vehicle and valet procedure support that.
Verify that the valet is authorized
Look for a staffed stand, consistent uniforms or badges, posted operator name, rate information, and a controlled key process. Confirm with the restaurant that the valet serves its guests and ask where vehicles are stored. A vest, cone, or handwritten sign alone is not proof of authorization.
Note the operator name and contact number. Ask about hours, closing time, retrieval time, oversized vehicles, accessible service, manual transmissions, electric vehicles, and any distance or garage restrictions. If the operation appears improvised or the restaurant cannot confirm it, do not surrender the vehicle.
Document the handoff
Stop where directed, set the parking brake, place the vehicle in park, and take your belongings. Point out existing scratches, wheel damage, mechanical quirks, or dashboard warnings and make sure the attendant acknowledges them. Record the handoff time and odometer.
Ask whether the operator performs an intake inspection and how pre-existing damage is recorded. Do not sign a blank form. If the ticket contains terms, read them before walking away. Photograph both sides of the claim ticket and any posted rates or conditions.
Control keys and access credentials
Detach house, office, mailbox, storage, and other vehicle keys. Provide only the required car key, fob, key card, or temporary digital credential. Use a manufacturer’s valet mode, guest profile, restricted key, or PIN-to-drive feature when available and when you understand how it works.
Do not reveal unrelated alarm, gate, or home access codes. If the car uses a phone key, ask how the operator accepts it without gaining access to your phone or account. Confirm that the credential will be disabled or returned at pickup.
Protect the claim ticket
Treat the ticket like a temporary key. Keep it in a secure pocket and do not leave it on the restaurant table, post it online, or hand it to an unknown person. If the ticket shows a plate number, key slot, QR code, barcode, or vehicle description, sharing it can expose retrieval information.
If the ticket is lost, tell the valet manager and restaurant immediately. Expect identity and ownership verification. Do not pressure an attendant to release the car without checks; a careful process protects every customer.
Request the car and inspect it
Request retrieval with enough time before the valet closes, especially after a large event. Present the original claim ticket through the official stand or approved digital process. Match the vehicle, plate, and key before accepting it.
Walk around the car in good light before entering traffic. Check bumpers, doors, mirrors, glass, wheels, tires, interior, odometer, fuel or charge, warning lights, and belongings. Start the vehicle and listen for unusual sounds. If lighting is poor, use a phone light and ask to move only to a nearby safe inspection spot with staff present.
Respond to damage or missing property
Stop and notify the valet manager before leaving. Photograph the condition, location, ticket, dashboard, and surrounding area; save dashcam footage if available. Ask for an incident report, operator details, insurer or claims contact, employee names, vehicle movement record, and any available surveillance preservation process.
For theft, collision, unsafe operation, or refusal to document a material incident, contact local law enforcement through the appropriate emergency or non-emergency channel. Notify your auto insurer promptly and follow its evidence instructions. Keep estimates, receipts, messages, and the restaurant’s contact information.
Confirm fees and tipping
Ask whether valet service is complimentary, validated, flat-rate, hourly, event-priced, or subject to late pickup, oversized vehicle, or garage charges. Confirm whether payment goes to the valet operator or restaurant and whether cashless payment adds a separate convenience fee.
A tip is normally separate from a required parking fee unless the policy says otherwise. Use the approved payment method, verify the total before tapping, and obtain a receipt. Never feel rushed into paying an amount that does not match the posted or quoted terms.
Choose an alternative when needed
Self-parking may be better when you carry sensitive equipment, need frequent vehicle access, use unusual controls, have a very tall or modified vehicle, or cannot separate private keys. Ask the restaurant about accessible parking, garage clearance, lighting, pedestrian routes, and reservation validation.
If you plan to drink alcohol, arrange a sober driver, taxi, rideshare, or public transit rather than treating valet parking as a safety plan. The best choice is the one that preserves safe transportation, clear key custody, predictable fees, and a documented handoff.
