Trapp Haus BBQ Introduce
Trapp Haus BBQ, situated in the energetic Roosevelt Row Arts District of Downtown Phoenix, is not your average barbecue joint. It is a premier dining destination founded by the award-winning Pitmaster Phil Johnson—famously known as "Phil the Grill"—a veteran of the competitive barbecue circuit and a personality featured on the Food Network. Trapp Haus BBQ represents a unique and flavorful fusion, blending championship-style slow-smoked barbecue with an urban, Southern-style cooking approach, all infused with a distinctive New York flair that pays homage to Phil's Manhattan roots. This commitment to a unique style, which he describes as "freestyle BBQ, savory and sweet with a little bit of heat," has firmly established Trapp Haus as a must-visit spot for barbecue lovers across Arizona.
The restaurant proudly identifies as a Black-owned business, adding a layer of cultural significance to its place in the vibrant downtown community. The atmosphere is as much a draw as the food; the rustic yet trending space features fun, whimsical, and cultural paintings and murals that pay tribute to the owner's background and the artistic spirit of Roosevelt Row. This aesthetically pleasing environment, complete with great lighting and a bar onsite, makes it an ideal location for a relaxed meal, whether for locals, ASU students, or visitors exploring the area.
At the heart of Trapp Haus BBQ is a menu built on high-quality, hickory, cherry, and maple smoked meats. Popular cuts include the fall-off-the-bone ST Louis Ribs, the melt-in-your-mouth Sliced Beef Brisket, and the expertly Smoked Pulled Pork. However, it's the signature items that truly set this establishment apart. Customers rave about the unique offerings, such as their legendary "Philly Crack Wings"—a highly-addictive favorite that often sells out—and unique sides like the BBQ Baked Beans, which have been noted for their unique sausage base rather than the traditional brisket base. The mac & cheese is consistently praised for its creamy, homemade quality, and the culinary creativity extends to the sauces, including a highly unique, strawberry-jelly-inspired option that provides an authentic and unique take on barbecue flavor.
Trapp Haus BBQ is centrally located at the core of Downtown Phoenix's art and entertainment scene, making it highly accessible from all corners of the Valley. ★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1This is a great place to go in groups. the restaurant is very aesthetically pleasing; there’s such fun paintings, the lighting, the outdoor seating area.. it’s great. Not too many waiters that I saw, perhaps because it was slow. Their customer service was nice; very understanding and attentive. The pricing is amazing! Very very affordable; I paid less than 30 for two; including extra side and drink. The food was good. I wasn’t a fan of the potato salad or the excessive fat on the pork belly, but the wings were great; crispy on the outside, tender on the inside. not too spicy though; the Nashville hot was nowhere near as hot as I expected it to be, but it’s not necessarily a bad thing; they were still flavorful. As for the pork belly I had ordered, I’ve ordered it at other places before and really not a picky eater, but I could not stomach the extra fat; at times, it grossed me out to the point that I couldn’t finish it. Aside from the fat, the rest of the pork belly was delicious. The meat was flaky on the outside but juicy on the inside and the sauce was perfect. The mac & cheese is great not sure if it was oven baked or not, but definitely creamy.
November 24 · Adeline BarajasWhat an authentic experience. A unique take on bbq. From the beans using a sausage base vs. brisket. To the strawberry like jelly inspired sauce. I enjoyed it all! The service was amazing and entertaining! Low key place that should not be overlooked! Highly recommend!
November 01 · T.C. G-FIBEROften when I pass by this place, there is a long waiting period. I got lucky this time and barely waited 10 minutes. I have to say, the second I stepped in, the staff was attentive and immediately was helped. When seated, our server took our drink order. We arrived after noon and by then, I guess we miss out Bc we were told they both longer had potato salad and certain ribs (which is why I came here in the first place.) Once we ordered our food, the wait for it took a while. (Good thing the conversation at the table too was intense to notice.) The food was pretty good: Classic Sandwich with pork meat. I would’ve enjoyed it more if it had more BBQ sauce, it was a bit dry. Flavorful but a tad dry. The music there is PERFECT—caught myself dancing in my chair as I ate. If I’m around, and if craving BBQ, I would be coming in. Great service!!!
March 05 · Gabby LaraDisgusting is the appropriate word. Food was....disgusting. service sucked. Prices too high.Since they were out of all meats we ordered fried shrimp, it was oily...breading was falling off and salty. Served with tarter sauce.. ick.Mac and chess was COLD.6 very tiny wings with "rub" . Bland...cold and the rub was REALLY salty. Some of us just want a menu...which server gave us after I said "What good is ordering from the QR if you're out of everything?"Not even worth a trip back for the barbecue. We paid over $30 for what is pictured. Go across the street to Taco Boys. Skip this mess.
