Pete's Fish & Chips Introduce
For Arizonans seeking a taste of local history mixed with quick, satisfying comfort food, Pete's Fish & Chips in Phoenix stands as a decades-old institution. Established in 1947 by Peter McLane Grant Jr., this unique eatery has grown from a simple wooden shack to a recognized, family-owned local chain that has been serving generations of Arizona customers. While the name suggests a classic English-style fish and chips shop, Pete's has cultivated its own distinct, fast-casual American identity over more than 75 years, focusing on deep-fried specialties, burgers, and a signature sauce that has become legendary in the Valley.
The core concept of Pete's Fish & Chips revolves around providing quick, affordable, and comforting meals, which has cemented its place in the local culinary landscape. It is not just a seafood restaurant; it is also classified as an American restaurant and a fast food joint, making it a versatile choice for a quick lunch, a family dinner, or a late-night bite. The atmosphere is notably casual and has a historic feel, often attracting a diverse crowd including college students, families, groups, and tourists eager to experience a piece of Phoenix history.
The dedication to the founder's original philosophy—maintaining low prices, offering good food, and providing service that is both prompt and friendly—is a tradition that continues today. While some patrons have noted that the fish fillets and shrimp are served in a distinctive, more square or strip-like breaded format, diverging from traditional British preparations, many loyal customers have a deep, multi-generational fondness for this unique style and the secret 'Pete's Sauce' that accompanies it. This blend of history, unique offerings, and efficient service is what makes Pete's a truly local Arizona experience.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1The fish is literally a fish stick/patty nothing out of the ordinary. It’s a no for me not if I’m wanting fish and shrimps. The guy on the special not friendly at all. My order was $15 and change which wouldn’t be bad had it been real seasoned fish and shrimps. Do not recommend
August 18 · Drea JohnsonI'm visiting Phoenix for the first timeI researched Pete's Fish and Chips before showing up. They are as proud of this establishment as El Paso is proud to call Chico's Tacos their own. I knew in advance you have to eat outside at a picnic table and that you are to eat with your hands. No plastic ware is provided. It is cash only. I ordered the #2 special (2 fish, 7 shrimp, fries and a 32 oz. Drink. I paid an upcharge for substituting onion rings for fries. I asked for a magnet souvenir and the girl asked "nuts or no nuts?" I told her a magnet like you stick on a refrigerator, not a brownie. It took 3 tries to get the magnet. It was free. Although it took a while for the order, it was hot and fresh. I expected some tartar sauce but instead received 3 cocktail sauces. It worked. The fish were small and square, like McDonald's. The shrimp were a breaded strip that contained small shrimp. The printed hype didn't match reality. San Antonio easily has better chain establishments, like J. Anthony's or Sea Island. I was greatly disappointed.
April 08 · David LewisVery inconvenient for people who go on lunch break and don't have cash on hand. They need a larger sign stating "CASH ONLY" before anyone enters the drive through line. I unfortunately ordered quickly, as it was the first time at this location and didn't notice it anywhere, but it was also at night. I waited approximately over 15 minutes stuck in the drive thru line when I got to the window and was informed it was cash only.
August 29 · JFood is ok. Just want to try. Expect that all deep fried food with super thick breading. Serving is large for my order. Fast order and service. Covered but very open seating area. There's a good flow of customers when I was there. Parking is more than enough. Cash only by the way. They have an ATM IN FRONT.
September 26 · Sapat LangThe service was good it is cash only. the fish and shrimp combo is not good. I feel like you could get a better quality fish stick at the grocery store.
