El Carbonero Introduce
For Arizona locals seeking a truly authentic taste of Central America, **El Carbonero** on West Indian School Road offers a culinary journey unlike any other Mexican restaurant in the area. This establishment uniquely combines popular Mexican cuisine with the deep, rich flavors of Salvadoran tradition, specializing in the renowned **Pupusa**. Stepping through the doors, customers are immediately transported, feeling the "real" and "authentic" atmosphere reminiscent of a genuine mom-and-pop shop in El Salvador itself. This distinct cultural immersion is what sets El Carbonero apart, making it a must-visit for food enthusiasts in Phoenix looking for more than just the usual fare.
El Carbonero shines brightest when it comes to its local specialty. The **Pupusas**, small, thick, handmade corn tortillas stuffed with savory fillings, are the main attraction, with varieties like **Pollo con Queso** ($2.50) and the spicy **Pupusas con Jalapeño** ($2.50). While some feedback suggests that certain Mexican items or sides could benefit from more flavor—mentioning a red sauce that was "too watery" or a tamal that "lack a bit of flavor"—the consensus remains strong: for authentic, homemade pupusas, this is the place to be. This focus on the cultural core of Salvadoran cuisine ensures that El Carbonero is serving a true taste of **Comfort food** that is deeply cherished by those in the know.

★ 5★ 4★ 3★ 2★ 1Once you past their doors inside, get ready to get a thru feeling of El Salvador very authentic the place is as real as any mom and pop shop in El Salvador, if you are looking for pupusas this is the place (all 3 we had were great) the rest of the food was just ok, red sauce too watery, tamal lack a bit of flavorand horchata too sweet. The atmosphere is as you will find a place in El Salvador table cloths very humble feeling. Area kind of sketchy but safeService was like your aunt taking care of you , very family felt not overwhelmed. The only reason I don't give this place 5 stars is because I expect a lot more for that, but yes, I do recommend anyone around the area but expect the humble place and feel like visiting a hole in the wall good place. Good prices, and don't forget to get real homemade pupusas. You will have to wait a bit.
January 07 · Hector RodriguezBeware! If you want your 2 yr old to get full off 5 pupusas together this is the perfect place. I have never seen such an overpriced minature pupusa ever.
July 17 · Eloy PortilloWent to eat with my mom on Saturday, they had a special for pupusas at $2.25 on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The main cashier wanted to charge us normal price, $3.50 even after we pointed out the special listed on the menu. The lady was rude and told us the special was only for the pupusas on the left of the menu and not the ones on the right, but the special listed on the menu didn't specify that. If she didn't know how to change that on the cash register she should've just said that. Instead of honoring the correct amount, she refused to give us the refund for the overpayment.
September 09 · latinagrl123Best papuzas in town but location is not the greatest in town. Old restaurant but the food is amazing 10/10
February 10 · Angelica PerezI always look for new places to eat when I travel to Phoenix. This place did not disappoint, great tasting Popusas. Location is not the best, but like they say "don't judge a book by its cover". Prices are very reasonable and drinks are not overpriced. We had Popusas and they all tasted great, I was very pleased with the taste and the service was great as well. Will definitely eat there again in the future.
